Thurgood recieved his law degree in 1933 and he later opened up his own law practice in Baltimore. He became known as a lawyer who would speak up for the rights for African- Americans. Thurgood Marshall married twice. He married his first wife, Vivian Burey, in 1929. Their marriage lasted 25 years until her death. Vivian died in1955 of cancer. Later, Marshall married his second wife, Cecilia Suyat in 1955. Their marriage lasted until his death.
Marshall's career began soon after completing law school. He took his first case in 1933, against the University of Maryland. Marshall successfully sued the university for denying the admission of a African American girl due to race. This began his fight for equal rights. Thurgood Marshall soom became active in the civil rights movement. In 1936, Marshall earned a job with the NAACP( National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). He was the first appointed as the assistant to special counsel Charles Hamilton Houston. Thurgood Marshall made numerous contributions to the success of the NAACP during the civil rights movement. He was responsible for the litigation strategy that challenged racial oppression in education, housing, transportation, electorial politicals, and criminials justice. Marshall gained his greatest fame in 1954.
